23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Fill us at
daybreak
with your kindness,
that we may shout
for joy and gladness. . . .
Prosper the work
of our hands for us.
Wisdom 9:13-18
The wise person understands how little he or she really knows. Human frailty limits our ability to grasp the great mysteries of life.
Philemon 1:9-10, 12-17
In prison, Paul has befriended and baptized the fugitive slave and thief Onesimus. Paul sends him back to his fellow Christian Philemon and asks that he receive him now as a brother in Christ.
Luke 14:25-33
Whoever aspires to follow Jesus must recognize the cost involved and be willing to sacrifice everything in order to possess the ultimate good ― eternal life.
FROM THE PASTOR
In these challenging economic times, the message of Labor Day takes on added importance. We pray that all will have work that enhances their human dignity and enables them to provide for their families and contribute to the building of God’s kingdom. Have a relaxing holiday weekend!
Summer Changes
These months have been busy ones at Saint Jean Baptiste. Work on the renovation and expansion of the high school building is nearing completion. Thanks to the generosity of a grant from the General Administration of the Congregation de Notre Dame, our students will enjoy a true state-of-the-art facility. The transformation is amazing! The dedication is scheduled for early December.
In the church, you will notice a new music area in the south transept. This is the gift of parishioner Valerie Klaus through a bequest in her will. Valerie was an enthusiastic member of the Parish Choir and, at the time of her death, served as the Chair of the Pastoral Council.
The area incorporates unused wooden radiator covers, new elements designed with input from a committee of parishioners and staff, lighting, and chairs to create a permanent home for our choirs, organ console, and piano.
Sympathy
We extend our deepest condolences to Christine Valentine, one of our very dedicated lectors, on the death of her husband Eric following a prolonged illness, and to Cristina Pino, the wife of Deacon Joseph Pino, whose mother Luzmila Caycho died on Monday, August 30. May they rest in peace!

REMEMBERING FATHER SLATTERY
A Memorial Mass for Father Edmund Slattery, S.S.S., former Catholic Chaplain at Lenox Hill Hospital, will take place on Saturday, September 18, at 11:00 a.m. Father Slattery was a man of great compassion and a true New Yorker. He was ordained to the priesthood in the sanctuary of Saint Jean’s on March 25, 1950, and served the church and the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament generously for 60 years as a priest.
This is an opportunity for all to celebrate his life and his ministry over many years to the hospital community and the parish. We are especially pleased that members of his family will be present for the Mass.
JUSTFAITH
JustFaith is an intensive 30-week program that explores the riches of Catholic social teaching through prayer, study, reflection, and lived experience.
Those who have participated in JustFaith at Saint Jean’s have said that it changed their lives. For more information about JustFaith, which will begin anew later this month, contact Jean at 917.207.4452..

Unemployment continues to be of serious concern for New Yorkers. Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York has provided 23 career coaching workshops to more than 370 participants. Our "Help and Hope" program offers short-term career counseling through workshops at parishes for individuals who have lost their jobs, anticipate a job loss, or need to change jobs. NEW HOPE FOR INFERTILITY
Are you struggling with infertility or recurrent miscarriage? Did you know that there is an alternative to in vitro fertilization for treating these conditions that is completely in line with Catholic Church teaching and allows a couple to conceive naturally, with success rates that are as good as or better than IVF?
NaProTechnology™ is a new approach to correcting infertility and preventing miscarriage that is based on 35 years of scientific research and is consistent with Catholic medical ethics. NaProTechnology™ is available at the Gianna Catholic Healthcare Center for Women, in midtown Manhattan. Informational sessions about the NaProTechnology™ approach are held on the third Thursday of every month at Saint Catherine of Siena Church, 411 East 68 Street, at 7:00 p.m. For more information, visit www.giannahealth.org or call 212.481.1219.
REMEMBERING 9.11
There is a sacredness
in tears.
They are not
the mark of weakness
but of power.
They speak
more eloquently
than ten-thousand tongues.
They are messengers
of overwhelming grief . . .
and unspeakable love.
